Opening a Japan Post Bank account

How to open a Japan Post Bank account (2 ways below)

■the Bank Account Opening Support Service

At the bank account opening sessions held in October, international students in UTokyo can open a Japan Post Bank (Yucho) account using the Yucho Tetsuzuki App.
We strongly recommend using these sessions instead of visiting a bank counter, as it can be difficult to make reservations and English support is not available at bank branches.

■Yucho Tetsuzuki App

You can open a bankbook-free general account called "Yucho Direct + (Plus)", which does not issue bankbooks. No personal seal is required.

1. How to open an account: upload personal information and ID documents using a smartphone.
2. Required documents:
  - Residence card (Complete your residence registration at the ward/city office and have your address printed on the residence card.)
  - Student ID card
3. User Manuals (Detailed instructions and Videos)
4. It takes about two weeks from application to account opening and card delivery (may vary depending on the circumstances of the screening).

*Students who need to open a bank account for scholarship payments and whose names in katakana exceed 30 characters should note that, after the account is opened, the name displayed in the online system (Yucho Direct) will be limited to a maximum of 30 characters. Such students are requested to follow the instructions provided by the staff in charge of their scholarship.
If you are unable to open an account through either of the two methods above and must, out of necessity, open one at a Japan Post Bank (Yucho) branch counter, please follow the procedure below.

■Opening an account at Branch(Only if you are unable to open an account through the bank account opening support service or the Yucho procedure app)
Please use the branch of Japan Post Bank listed on the following website that is closest to your home or the campus you usually attend:
https://www.jp-bank.japanpost.jp/kojin/access/kj_acs_arealist.html

1. Make an appointment (Required)

2. Required documents (e.g., for the Koishikawa Branch):
  - Residence card (Complete your residence registration at the ward/city office and have your address printed on the residence card.)
  - Student ID card NB
  - Seal
  - Individual Number ("My Number") (if you wish to make foreign remittances)
(Account opening will be done on a tablet at the branch.)
*For information on required documents at other branches, please contact the respective branch directly.

3. Notes:
  - It is necessary to book an appointment in advance of visiting a branch. Please make sure to keep your appointment on time and do not cancel without prior notice.
  - If it is difficult communicating in Japanese, please bring someone who understands Japanese. You may not be able to open a bank account if it is determined that communication between you and a bank officer is not sufficient by a bank.

4. Time to open an account: approximately 2 weeks (If no issues arise, the account can be opened on the same day. However, if security-related checks are required, the process may take over two weeks. )

*We recommend opening an account via the Yucho Tetsuzuki App as you may be guided the App at the branch.
