Message from the Program Leader
- This center aims to become a world-class venue undertaking advanced research in mathematics and fostering next generation leaders in the broad field of mathematical sciences. We intend to promote development of pure and applied mathematics simultaneously.

Professor Kunihiko Kodaira, a graduate of our department and a Fields medalist, worked in all fields of mathematics including algebra, geometry and analysis. Another graduate from the same period, Professor Kiyoshi Ito laid the foundation of mathematical finance and won the first Gauss Award. This fact shows that pure (core) and applied (industrial) mathematics is one integrated research field. This is the reason why successful researchers in pure mathematics often expand their studies into applied mathematics. This project will be carried out in coordination with a wide range of faculties including natural sciences, engineering and medical sciences. In particular, several professors of information science and economics are actively involved as members of the project. We will employ the majority of doctoral course students as research assistants (RA) in order to support their economic independence. RA will be engaged in a limited term of educational activities as a teaching assistant (TA). We will employ young researchers as visiting faculties who will have reduced teaching duties. In addition, young researchers with outstanding achievements will be given the title “Kodaira Fellow” in the hope that this will further encourage these promising talents. We will appoint coordinators for each group of graduate students and young researchers who support them pursuing future career paths.

In order to promote internationalization, we intend to become an open department where researchers will gather from around the world. Our slogan is “you can meet someone whenever you go to the University of Tokyo.” While inviting outstanding researchers as visiting faculties from around the world, we will hold international conferences and conduct joint research projects participated in by a large number of short term visiting researchers.
