Abstract: We'll take a new look at the assembly map for a discrete torsion-free group and give a new and completely K-theoretic proof of the L²-index theorem of Atiyah. Key ingredients will be the HNN-extension groups and a generalized Chern character for function algebras. Joint work with Jens Kaad.
