Abstract: Haagerup--Størmer's conjecture (1988) asserts that any pointwise inner automorphism of a type III₁ factor is the composition of an inner and a modular automorphism. We prove that a large class of nonamenable almost periodic type III₁ factors satisfy the conjecture. The key idea in the proof is to study a "local version" of pointwise inner automorphisms and then reduce the problem to Araki--Woods subfactors. This is Joint work with C. Houdayer.
