Abstract: In this talk I will explain joint work with A. Ioana and J. Peterson, in which we prove structural results for the von Neumann algebras associated with semi-simple lattices, like SL(n,Z) for arbitrary n > 1. This is based on a weakening of Ozawa's bi-exactness. This weaker property is satisfied by many groups while it remains useful for von Neumann algebraic purposes.
