SL(n,R) などの半単純 Lie 群にはなじみがあるが，無限次元表現論は専門外の人を主な対象として， 半単純 Lie 群の既約表現の分類のおおまかな説明と重要な表現（離散系列表現やその一般化である Zuckerman 導来函手加群）の基本的な構成法についての解説をする．
